Change to a core rule
Changes
Flipped the position of the Jack and the Queen in the document to make it make more sense point-wise.
Reformatted the card value section to make it a table which condenses the rules slightly.
Made shifting center a core rule instead of an optional rule because the small depth it does add makes the game more fun.
This rule has been removed:
- If you cannot claim an empty square or capture a rival square, you must place a lower-value card on one of your own cards anywhere on the board to draw a new card.
- You may also place a higher-value card on one of your connected cards to strengthen it or to draw a new card as a tactical choice.
Replaced by:
If you cannot place a card on your turn, you must end your turn and draft a new card. If there are no cards left to draft, you must pass until you can place a card again, or until your opponent has placed all their cards.
The Why
This rule replaces an older, more complicated option that was rarely used and often caused confusion (“wait, which cards can I stack where?”). In practice, by the time you run out of placement options, the outcome is already decided.
Rather than prolonging a lost position, this streamlined simplification speeds the game toward its conclusion, rewards aggressive play over passive play, and keeps the focus on controlling the board. It also retains a small window open for the exceedingly rare case where the winning player becomes cornered, allowing them to draft and fight their way free.
